First Step Information
 
Forest Schools
Forest School sessions take place regularly and your child will have access to outdoor play daily. Please ensure your child has wellies to remain in school.
 
Reading
Reading is extremely important in the Early Years. We encourage parents to read a story a day with their child, this can be done at bedtime or to encourage some quiet time at home.
 
Speech and Language
Communication and Language is a focus within our 2 Year Old room. Below is more information that you might find useful to use at home. Miss Emma is our Communication Champion at Heathfield. Any questions regarding communication in Early Years, please ask to speak to Miss Emma.
 
EYFS Progress Check at aged Two
 
Once your child is fully settled in First Steps, staff will complete a two-year check. 
 
The learning and development requirements of the statutory framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) states that when a child is aged between two and three, practitioners must review their progress, and provide parents and/or carers with a short written summary of their child's development in the prime areas. This progress check must identify the child's strengths, and any areas where the child's progress is less than expected.

 

Aims of the EYFS progress check at age two:

 

  • review a child's development progress in the three prime areas
  • ensure that parents have a clear picture of their child's development
  • enable practitioners and parents to understand the child's needs and plan activities to meet them
  • note areas where a child is progressing well and identify any areas where progress is less than expected
  • describe actions the setting intends to take to address any developmental concerns (including working with other professionals where appropriate).
 
Parents can share the two-year check with Health Visitors during their next visit.
Early Years Curriculum at Heathfield Primary School
 

At Heathfield, our curriculum lays out the way we teach our children to achieve our mission statement;

 

Learning together, learning for life.

 

The curriculum consists of all the planned activities and routines that we organise in order to promote learning, confidence and self-esteem. We ensure there is a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities to ensure children have time to explore their own ideas.  It includes not only the formal requirements of the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children.

The EYFS curriculum is coherently planned based on children’s needs, interests and carefully considered outcomes. This is derived from Quality texts and experiences of the wider world.  At Heathfield, we recognise the importance of providing children with high quality texts as this is an essential way to build a wide and rich vocabulary and supports long term memory.
