THE HEATHFIELD WAY

THE HEATHFIELD WAY

HEATHFIELD CURRICULUM INTENT – THE HEATHFIELD WAY

The children at Heathfield are provided with an inter connected curriculum that promotes meaningful connections between concepts and knowledge (Heathfield Head), develops genuine and robust character traits to prepare children for life in the modern world (Heathfield Heart) and opportunities for children to use and apply their Head and Heart to answer learning questions (Heathfield Hands) resulting in knowledgeable, physically and mentally healthy children that achieve their potential and have a solid foundation to become lifelong learners.

KEY PHRASES THAT UNDERPIN THE HEATHFIELD WAY

  • Heathfield values
  • Consistency is key; translating good to excellence
  • Keep up not catch up
  • Everyone is a teacher of SEND – high expectations, high challenge, high support through adaptive teaching
  • Go slow to go faster
  • Practise makes permanent

RATIONALE BEHIND OUR PRACTICE

The Heathfield intent is based on the aim that all children will achieve their potential and have a solid foundation to become lifelong learners. In order for every child to achieve their potential and to ensure the all Heathfield staff are facilitating every child’s right to be taught effectively, we need to ensure that all children’s needs are met consistently throughout the school.

TEACHING AND LEARNING POLICY

At Heathfield, we use evidenced informed practice to inform our approach, strategies and pedagogy.

ROSENSHINE’S PRINCIPLES OF DIRECT INSTRUCTION

Although each subject is different and will contain subject specific pedagogy, our underlying principles are based around Rosenshine’s principles of direct instruction. These can be summarised as:

  1. Present new material using small steps
  2. Provide models
  3. Provide scaffolds for difficult tasks
  4. Ask questions
  5. Check for understanding
  6. Guide children’s practice
  7. Independent practice
  8. Obtain a high success rate
  9. Daily review
  10. Weekly/monthly review

We have considered what these principles mean at Heathfield. Further details can be found in our Teaching and Learning Policy.
